Water Pump Removal and Replacement

April 26 2017

As I mentioned previously, one of the first changes to be made to the LS3 for my application will be to remove the water pump.   This will allow me to move the engine up close behind the firewall and still have room to pass the various engine harnesses and shift cables through the stock location in the firewall.   My plan is to cool the engine using a remote electric water pump.  This may also allow me the option to move the pump to the front of the car, thus transferring a little weight away from the rear.   I haven't decided on a pump make or model but I have purchased the Moroso 63616 Remote Water Pump Adapters which as designed for the GM LS series engines.   Here is what they look like and a written description below.

Moroso 63616 Details
Remote water pump adapters mount in place of the bulky GM LS series water pump and frees up space where normally a water pump would reside in race cars and in LS engine conversions. This kit allows the use of a more compact, cost-effective remote electric water pump and includes 2 billet aluminum adapter blocks (right and left), fasteners, Viton O-rings, and 4 high flow -12 AN fittings.
Note: Requires the use of a remote thermostat housing, such as Moroso Part No. 63425 or 63426
Specifications:

Today the Moroso Remote Water Pump Adapters arrived.  I bought them through TDot Performance.  They are a Canadian based parts supplier with free shipping.  They were fast to process my order and sent update emails as the parts were packaged and shipped with a Purolator tracking number.  It was a positive experience for me and I recommend them if you are Canadian and want to avoid expensive shipping and customs fees / hassles.

Here are the parts that arrived.  They even included a couple decals for the tool box.  :)

Here is the front of the engine and as you can see, the pump is quite a large protrusion.  As I demonstrated in an earlier post, the pump and inlet / outlet fittings will be right up against the firewall once the engine is installed.   The Moroso kit will replace the pump and allow the use of elbow 12-AN fittings and hoses which are much more compact.

The pump is held on with six bolts.  Its so nice to work on a new clean engine.

The Moroso adapters use the stock GM water pump gaskets to seal against the block.

Here are the adapters fitted to the block with the supplied stainless steel bolts torqued to 22 ft-lbs as per GM spec.

I grabbed a couple 12-AN caps from work to put on the new Moroso adapters.  Don't want to bang up those threads while moving the engine around.

The reversed intake manifold looks like it was easy enough... good thing otherwise you'd suck the all air out of the cabin in a jiffy!
The water pump mod doesn't look from the photos to save you much space, especially after you attach a couple 90 degree elbows to those AN fittings. Perhaps it's just the angle of the photos.

Thanks Dave.  I agree with you that the Moroso adapters seem to be protruding quite far.  I am not sure why they are made so thick.  I am sure there is atleast 1" of extra aluminum there.   But they are an improvement over the stock pump.  Here are a couple pics, one with an 12-AN elbow fitted to the adapter and the measurement is approximately 5" from the front of the block.  The second pic is the stock water pump and its about 5-1/2" from the block mounting surface without a molded rubber hose elbow fitted.  Plus the other end of the water pump has the thermostat housing and outlet fitting which is over 6" without the hose elbow, so the Moroso fittings are an improvement of 2" - 3" over the stock pump.  Not a huge difference but every inch matters when you are trying to push the engine forward as far as possible.
